Rainfall was spotty over the last week, but some places did end up with a good amount.  Okarche was on the lower end of things coming in at 0.58 of an inch.  Northwest Oklahoma missed out the most:

After a long stretch of warm weather, where 34 of 37 days saw above normal temperatures (May 22 – June 27) – we managed to put together a couple of very nice days.  The high temperature on the 28th and 29th stayed below 90 degrees in Okarche, and more important, dew point temperature fell to as low as 50 degrees.

Light winds, dry air and mild temperatures made for a couple of incredible evenings.  We added some of the seasons first fireworks to the mix at the BBQ on the 28th:

Elsewhere… I don’t usually post up work by others here, but Skip Talbot posted up some time lapse video of a Minnesota tornado event (June 17, 2010) that was amazing!  The video is over six minutes long, but well worth the time to check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raoJU-OevN0&feature=player_embedded

Finally… the first Hurricane of the Atlantic 2010 season is Alex.  With a pressure of 28.32 inches and 80 M.P.H. winds… the eye is now evident this morning about 187 Nautical Miles southeast of the Brownsville, Texas radar site:

Active weather pattern produces at least 72 tornadoes over six days…

The weather pattern became an active one from April 20 to April 25 and produced at least 72 tornadoes from Colorado to North Carolina.

On the 20th… two tornadoes occurred in the Texas panhandle.  One of which looked rather large but got rated EF0 because it didn’t hit anything.

On the 21st… a weak tornado occurred in Colorado.

On the 22nd… many tornadoes occurred in Colorado, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma.  The lone tornado in Oklahoma was a weak event in Beaver County.  Most of the tornadoes stayed in rural areas and none were rated greater than EF1.  It’s possible that as many as 27 tornadoes occurred.

On the 23rd… there may have been as many as 11 tornadoes scattered across Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

You know him – it’s BaltimoreBen!

Maybe as I get older – I find things like this cuter.  First of all… on a weather note… the snow that has fallen over the last couple of weeks in the Washington, D.C. area has been impressive.  I have heard first hand stories of some of the experiences up there and waiting for friends to send me some pictures which they said I could post here.

But… the main reason for me writing is to draw attention to a CNN iReport posted by BaltimoreBen.  Hopefully the link will remain active for awhile.

The sad thing is… I got more valuable information from this six year old than any of the ding-dong reporters that are actually getting paid to spread the news from the field.

Now That Man Saw Some Weather!

There are a couple of types of shows on television where you can hear the constant rambling of NOAA Weather Radio.  Pick any of a number of shows about storm chasing to hear it… or, any episode of “Deadliest Catch”.  I think “Deadliest Catch” has most storm chasing shows beat when it comes to being able to hear NOAA Weather Radio.  I spent several years as one of the “voices of weather radio” in the 1980’s before the system became automated.

The show “Deadliest Catch” – for those that don’t know – is about fishing (mostly for crab) in the Bering Sea area of Alaska.  Discovery Channel crews ride along with and tell the story of a handful of the fishing vessels each season and have always done a pretty good job of it.  The show quickly became my favorite a few years ago and is still today.

As with any reality show – it is pretty easy to pick some favorite players.  I always enjoyed the tales and trials from the “Northwestern” and the “Cornelia Marie”.  I was saddened to learn this morning about the passing of the “Cornelia Marie” Captain, Phil Harris.  He was a larger than life character on the show and will truly be missed by those of us fans that keep up with it.

Now to be honest, to the best of my knowledge, I never came within a few thousand miles of the man.  He seemed tough as nails and kind at heart… but for me to go on about him would be nothing more than a guess.  One thing I did know about him – that man saw some weather!

When things get boring in Oklahoma during the winter… I have found myself in the past calling up weather maps from Alaska just to watch the “bombs” – storm systems – roll through.  Plain wicked!  I’ve often wondered how you survive on land – let alone in a boat in those conditions!  The weather makes up a large reason I still love the show “Deadliest Catch”.

Our weather around here has been interesting enough that I haven’t had a reason to look at an Alaskan weather map lately.  Until hearing about the passing of Captain Phil.  There was no surprise to see a monster 966 MB low pressure area sitting on the Aleutian Islands moving straight for the fishing grounds.  In Oklahoma, our pressure is pretty low when it drops below 1000 MB… and very low – the type associated with major tornado outbreaks in the spring and blizzards in the winter – when the pressure is down around 990 MB.  966… for a weather observer – good stuff.  Not so much for a fisherman.  Rest in peace Phil… this is one storm you won’t have to deal with…

Various…

First up… The Great Blue Norther of 11/11/11.  Wednesday, November 11th was a special day in Oklahoma weather history.  It is the only date where Oklahoma City still maintains a record high temperature and record low temperature that occurred on the same day.  On November 11th, 1911… a strong cold front was blasting south through the Plains.   Many record high temperatures were set in advance of the front… only to see record lows set in the hours after frontal passage.  Oklahoma City saw a 66 degree difference between their high and low temperature – 83 degrees to 17 degrees.  One has to wonder how many people froze to death performing outdoor tasks or just traveling due to the lack of weather information broadcast at that time.

2nd… When 27 of the 31 days of the month experience below normal temperatures (as we did in Okarche in October) – the anti-global warming chatter really starts to appear.  It tends to lessen when we have months like the current one where 10 of the 12 days have seen above normal temperatures.  It looks like another couple of warm days are in store before cooler air filters in Saturday night.

3rd… FOG!  From late on November 10th until the morning of the 11th, fog in Okarche – and much of western Oklahoma – reduced visibilities to near zero.  And this was nearly a true zero!  The fog was about as dense as I have ever seen it – in some cases the visibility was around 20 feet here in town.

The online store delivers the good quality and quantity of the probiotics, anti-Candida diet and herbs can do this cialis generic magic. 4th… LACK of precipitation.  It’s been a couple of weeks since the last measurable precipitation in Okarche.  1.61 inches of rain fell on the 29th of October… but we have only seen a trace since then.  As with the temperatures – this looks to be changing this weekend and early next week.

5th… Leonid Meteor Shower.  During the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 17th… the Leonid peak will make its return.  While this years shower favors those watching in Asia… North America may see considerable numbers as well.  We also have the luck of a new moon which occurs the day prior – so, we shouldn’t see much interference from that.  In central Oklahoma, the hope is that we clear out the clouds from the approaching storm in time.

And finally… speaking of the approaching storm – a fairly strong storm system will be making its way through over the weekend.  Rain and cooler temperatures look likely.  With it may also come snow… yeah, I said it.  The most likely area for snowfall would be over northwest Oklahoma – but a rain changing over to snow mix may occur around here as well.  Some model data suggests the potential for accumulating snowfall in the main body of Oklahoma – but with ground temperatures as warm as they are – it shouldn’t last long and travel shouldn’t be impacted too much.

Cool Temperatures and a Hurricane Named Rick…

The weather in Okarche remains cool.  All of the first 17 days of the month have seen below normal temperatures.  In fact… 15 of the 17 days have been at least 10 degrees below normal.  You have to go back to September 27th to find a day with an average temperature above normal.  Prior to that… you have to go back to September 21st.  Other than the cool temperatures… there hasn’t been a lot of interesting weather to talk about.  So….

Yes, hurricane is listed in the subject.  Admittedly, hurricanes are not my shtick.  I don’t have a good feel for forecasting them… I don’t have any desire to chase one… and I really can’t understand why people DO chase them.  I’ve always said that you can get the same experience by driving down to the car wash and having someone spray you with the wand.  Having said that… someday I would like to chase a weakening tropical cyclone after it is well inland for the tornado possibilities.  Still, some do catch my interest.  One that has is Hurricane Rick which is roaming in the eastern Pacific at this time.  This is one heck of a storm.  The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center says that Rick has sustained winds of 180 M.P.H. and a central pressure of 906 MB.  This would be about 26.75 inches.  Putting that pressure in perspective and one VERY pretty satellite image of Rick:
