Rising carbon emissions could kill off vital corals by 2100

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth. Coral reefs support more species per unit area than any other marine environment, including about 4,000 species of fish, 800 species of hard corals and hundreds of other species. Scientists estimate that there may be another 1 to 8 million undiscovered species of organisms living in and around reefs (Reaka-Kudla, 1997). This biodiversity is considered key to finding new medicines for the 21st century. Many drugs are now being developed from coral reef animals and plants as possible cures for cancer, arthritis, human bacterial infections, viruses, and other diseases.

The commercial value of U.S. fisheries from coral reefs is over $100 million (NMFS/NOAA, 2001). In addition, the annual value of reef-dependent recreational fisheries probably exceeds $100 million per year. In developing countries, coral reefs contribute about one-quarter of the total fish catch, providing critical food resources for tens of millions of people (Jameson et al., 1995).

And again…

In a twisted, global version of Groundhog Day, 2016 was the warmest year of record for this blue/green ball of rock we call home.  This didn’t come as a surprise to those of us who keep up with (or care about) global climate change.  Month after month of above average temperatures will usually lead to such a record being broken.  If this sounds familiar, it’s because we did this last January when 2015 was the warmest year of record (until 2016) – and the January before that when 2014 was the warmest year of record (until 2015).  One could complain about how we sadly continue to elect leaders that ignore, or even more ignorantly, refuse to accept that this is occurring.  But in reality, we have likely passed the point of no return in this game, and even electing responsible leaders who would attempt to make a difference, probably couldn’t at this point.

When you have a strong belief about something and strong evidence to support your belief, it’s easy to want to jump to the, “I told you so” game when your belief plays out.  I really didn’t think that I would get the chance to play that game, thinking that it may be another 40 or 50 years down the road before dire impacts start taking place.  Now, I’m not so sure.  Evidence is mounting which supports catastrophic, cascading events being recognized in another 5 to 20 years.  That’s right, that first number is a five.  Roughly the IQ of Senator Jim Inhofe who may still be around showing us snowballs as his peer reviewed study denying global climate change.  This all of course assumes that he doesn’t confuse being in the air for being on the ground and tries to turn his plane into a Starbucks.  The, “I told you so” game may still be in play for me.

Hopefully this clears up my stance on the subject.  The complete 2016 details can be found using the link below which will take you to a combined NASA/NOAA report which was released Wednesday.
