Hopefully the cold is behind us now…

The last freeze of 2011 occurred on March 31st.  We rolled through April flirting with the freezing mark a couple of times, but that was early in the month and we ended up with a warm, dry April where the average high temperature of 77.2 degrees was the highest recorded.

Then came May… We had some areas of the garden that were looking a little tattered after the bitter cold of winter and the extreme winds of April.  We had thought that the worst was over, but May was introduced with a high temperature of 51 degrees (which set a record for the lowest high in the month) – and followed by a low of 36 degrees on the 2nd (also setting a record for the lowest temperature in the month).  Yes, we were back to covering up plants with the threat of a late season frost.

We are happy to report that everything came out fine… as well as all of the plants that we thought were destroyed over the winter.  Our only failures came with various perennials which were planted just two days before the April “Big Blow”.  Winds to near 60 m.p.h. scorched several of the plants that we will be re-planting soon.

Climatology says that we should now well be past any threat of frosty weather, and with highs forecast to be in the 90’s for several days right around the corner – we expect an explosion of color and good growth in the garden during the next couple of weeks.
