…Thunderstorm chances increase on Friday / Return to humid weather…
The axis of a deep long wave trough extends from the Minnesota/Wisconsin border to northeast Texas this Wednesday evening. This feature will be lifting northeastward across the Great Lakes on Thursday. In its wake, surface high pressure has settled southward across Oklahoma, bringing drier air and seasonably cool temperatures. Outside of the morning hours when some showers may linger across extreme southeast Oklahoma, Thursday will be a beautiful day across the state with morning lows in the 50’s. By afternoon, temperatures will warm into the 80’s under mostly sunny skies. South winds will begin to increase over the northwest half of the state during the afternoon and evening hours.
The next system to affect the Plains will be dropping southeast along the British Columbia coast on Thursday. By Friday, this wave will be swinging across the Pacific Northwest, and sharp pressure falls will be occurring across the central and northern Plains and Rockies. In turn, this will increase the south winds across Oklahoma and start a stream of deep and rich low level moisture heading north across the state. The strong warm air advection regime will assist in the development of widespread showers and thunderstorms across the state early on Friday. After the round of morning storms, attention will turn to the High Plains from western Kansas to western Texas. Model guidance is united in depicting a weak mid level short wave trough approaching the area during the afternoon. Steep mid level lapse rates will be overspreading a rich low level moist plume resulting in the atmosphere becoming very unstable. Forecast soundings show sufficient low and deep layer shear for the development of supercell storms. As the evening progresses, thunderstorms should organize into one or more clusters that will be spreading southeast across the main body of the state. The highest potential for storms will be across western and southern Oklahoma.
A few showers and storms may linger into Saturday morning over eastern Oklahoma. Otherwise, the state should see warm, humid and breezy conditions. A cold front will be dropping south across Kansas, and this front will be the focus for widespread showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. By late in the day, some of the activity will be approaching the Panhandle and far northern Oklahoma. This precipitation is likely to continue on at least a scattered basis into Sunday morning.
Guidance continues to be in good agreement into Sunday. A cold front will be located over the northwest part of the state early in the day, and this front will continue pushing southward across the state, reaching far southeast Oklahoma by sunset. The greatest lifting will be moving away from the state, but humid and unstable air, combined with convergence along the front, will likely lead to isolated or scattered showers and thunderstorms. The air mass behind the weekend front is similar to our recent front with below average temperatures and drier air. The problem with this front is that there will not be much support to drive the mildest air into the state. For now, it appears that the weekend will end quite humid.
…Hazards…
Early day thunderstorms on Friday will have the potential to produce marginally severe hail. By afternoon and evening, more organized severe thunderstorms will spread from northwest to southeast across the state. Hail and damaging winds will be possible with the strongest storms, and the tornado threat cannot be considered zero over western Oklahoma during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
