Northeast Oklahoma Supercell – May 11, 1992

The main action this day was across Southeast Oklahoma where a significant tornado outbreak occurred.  I didn’t get in on the SE Oklahoma show, but jumped out on a couple of nearby storms which tracked from Kingfisher into Logan County during the early afternoon.  I observed 2 inch hail in Guthrie with this activity.

Later, another supercell over Northern Oklahoma got my attention and I intercepted it near Pawnee.  This storm looked to have high tornado potential, but moved into a bad road network over Osage County which made chasing it further nearly impossible.

Tri-State tornado day – May 5, 1993

11 years after my first storm chase, this day was just what the doctor ordered to make me believe that I could be at least a little bit successful at storm chasing.  I recognized the pattern, envisioned the evolution well, and maneuvered around supercells that tracked out of the Northern Texas Panhandle – across the Oklahoma Panhandle – and into Southwest Kansas.

I initially played storms that were forming in the immediate Liberal, Kansas area, but these never really had the desired look and I moved south toward storms across the Northern Texas Panhandle.  From about 12 miles east of Guymon, I observed a very large tornado to my southwest.  This first tornado of the day was on the ground for almost 30 minutes as it moved north northeast before weakening west of me.

As the first tornado weakened, several things started happening very fast.  First was seeing a distant tornado with another supercell that was west of my target storm.  Attention to this tornado, and another brief one a few minutes later was refocused to my original storm as it started to produce a classic Plains tornado close to Optima Lake.  This tornado was only on the ground for four minutes, but was very pretty as it danced across the open farmland.

It took another 23 minutes before the next tornado formed, which worked out well as it gave me a nice long period to observe in awe the incredible updraft structure the storm displayed.

When tornado number five formed, it immediately grew to very large proportions.  It would reach a width of 1200 yards and was on the ground for about 13 miles, with its final mileage logged in Kansas.  Tornado number six formed about four minutes before number five weakened and both were on the ground to the south and southeast of Hugoton, Kansas.  The sixth tornado was also very large and ended up receiving a rating of F4 as it passed near Moscow, Kansas.

It was a good feeling to go out and manage a big tornado day on my own.  It was also one of the last big events I would be a part of before roads started getting clogged with excessive numbers of storm chasers.

Supercell near Reydon, OK – May 15, 1991

Supercell near Reydon, OK.

I got very familiar with north/south Highway 30 this afternoon.  I moved up and down it between Reydon and Erick several times looking at nearby storms forming, not knowing which one to stick with.  I eventually ended up near Arnett, but what all of this means is that I was too far south to take a look at the large tornado producer near Laverne.

Northern Oklahoma tornado event – April 26, 1991

VIDEO:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmZd_FDRCJQ

Chase partner, David Andra and I knew this was going to be an intense day dealing with violent and fast moving storms.  We got suckered on some early development in Grant and Garfield Counties which ended up being elevated and raced quickly northeast into Kansas.  Our start after these storms did put us in a very good position for what would become one of the storms of the day.

Vigorous storm development occurred around us by mid afternoon as we sat near Loyal.  Our target storm organized and moved directly over Enid where rain, hail and traffic slowed our progress some.  As we drove east out of Enid, a large tornado became visible (but with poor contrast) to our east northeast.  The tornado was entering its rope stage by the time we cleared heavy rain and were able to stop for pictures/video.

Not long after the first tornado dissipated, another brief – classic looking – tornado formed.  After that tornado weakened near Breckinridge, and while the storm was reorganizing, we made a move into Garber.  We observed one very small tornado just to the west of the town.

While departing the town eastbound, a circulation narrowly missed the truck, while lofting a considerable amount of small debris into the air.  This may very well have been the start of the long-track, Red Rock tornado.  We stopped a couple of miles east of Garber and observed the tornado just to our northwest.  The tornado steadily intensified and widened over the next 40 minutes, while quickly moving east northeast.  While we were nearly caught up in the circulation at the start of the tornado, we were about five miles behind it when it disappeared over Northeast Noble County.

Our trip back south down I-35 took us across the damage path.  There were a couple of buildings destroyed, a lot of tree and guardrail damage, and some dead cattle.  The tree damage was a scar that I could easily identify for 20 years after on my trips up or down I-35.  It has only been the last couple of years where it was hard to tell where the tornado crossed the interstate.

Tornado – Kingfisher County, Oklahoma – April 12, 1991

And things slowly begin to click.  I started the day pretty far to the west, but recognized dewpoints were mixing out and made a quick jump to the east.  I intercepted the first – somewhat disorganized – storms near Binger.  I made moves to the north and east through Hinton, Geary, Calumet and Kingfisher, observing some hail to the size of golfballs and occasional wall cloud features.  I took up a position just east of Lovell as an impressive updraft rotated strongly just to the west.

While it only lasted for five minutes, the small tornado east of Hennessey was a nice reward for a fairly well played day.  I found out later about the crazy tornado producers which were only about one more county to the north.   Such is the game.

Tornado – Concho, Oklahoma – May 26, 1990

Weak tornado near Concho, OK.

I was still trying to figure out this storm chasing game when this day arrived.  Well, I guess I’m still trying to figure it out over 20 years later, but this was during the first part of my solo chasing.  Supercell storms across Central Oklahoma were moving to the south with forward flank meso-cyclones.  I hung with one that moved out of Kingfisher County into Canadian County – doing my best not to be crushed with reported very large hail.

A weak tornado eventually formed near Concho.  It wasn’t much, but I did have time to get out my camera and capture a couple of photos.  After making a short move down the road, I came across and said hi to Chuck Doswell, who’s only response was, “Did you see it?”  As a young chaser, landing in the same spot as Chuck helped me believe I was doing something right.

Valentines Day Tornadoes – 1987

I had to talk my chase partner into going out on this day.  Oklahoma was socked in with clouds and cold air, but a warm front was forecast to lift northward across the Red River during the afternoon.

We drove straight through to Wichita Falls and stopped at the National Weather Service for a briefing.  The warm front had indeed lifted north (we passed it near the river), but there were no signs of storms on it.  The only thing on radar was a line of developing storms over 100 miles to our west.  The line didn’t look too interesting, and after dragging our feet a bit we started back north.

Our interest had changed to an OU basketball game that was on AM radio as we rolled back into the clouds near Lawton.  It wasn’t long before we started hearing the distinct sound of lightning over the radio and we began searching for what was causing it.  To our surprise, a severe storm had formed about 20 miles to our west.

The storm quickly took advantage of its position along the warm front and started spinning.  It produced a tornado at Medicine Park before getting out of Comanche County.  This tornado ended up being rated F2 and injured one person.  A second brief tornado was observed near Apache.

This was early enough for me that I wasn’t of age to get into a bar.  We stopped at one along the highway where I tried to use a phone to call the National Weather Service.  I was escorted out and never made the call.  The first the NWS ever knew about it was when we stopped back by the office later that evening.

Southwest Oklahoma Tornadoes – May 11, 1982

I just thought that the Ada storm chase back in March was impressive.  This time the chase had us on a storm that produced several tornadoes, including a very large one near Friendship, Oklahoma.  This tornado was surveyed to be 2100 yards wide and produced F3 damage.  Unfortunately, this tornado was another killer that resulted in the deaths of two people.

The second tornado of the day was observed near Lone Wolf.  The third was a multiple vortex tornado near Sentinel.

Once again, it had me asking the question, “Can it be this easy?”  The answer would come in a long line of non-productive chases that stretched out until 1987.  “Can it be this easy?” was replaced with “Are we ever going to see another tornado?”
