Summer Lightning Ramping Up
(August 10, 2011)
More severe thunderstorms moved into central Oklahoma from the evening of the 9th to the early morning of the 10th, producing a considerable amount of lightning.  After a long break, we are finally stringing together a nice stretch of active storms.

Severe Storms Produce Frequent Lightning And Widespread Wind Damage
(August 8, 2011)

Storms that formed in northwest Oklahoma during the afternoon quickly became severe and produced widespread wind damage - along with measured winds to near 100 mph as they spread eastward along and north of I-40.  The storms were prolific lightning producers which allowed for numerous photo opportunities across Kingfisher and Canadian Counties. GALLERY

Summer Lightning Season Off To Quick Start
(June 23, 2011)

Thunderstorms formed in northwest Oklahoma and moved southeastward toward Okarche during the evening.  The storms reached severe levels a couple of times producing winds to 60 m.p.h. near Putnam.  The activity was high-based and produced a lot of lightning - similar to what would be seen in the southwest U.S. at the start of the monsoon season.  All of my images were shot between 9 and 10 miles west of Okarche.  GALLERY

Four Day Chase Through Parts Of Oklahoma/Kansas/Nebraska/Colorado Provides Many Photo Ops
(June 18-21, 2011)

Doug Speheger and I left Okarche during the evening of the 18th and observed severe storms in Kansas.  The 19th was an exciting day spent observing several supercells and three tornadoes in Nebraska.  A similar day occurred on the 20th when more intense tornadoes were observed.  Our final day was a travel day back to Oklahoma.  The combined work made it one of the better "chase trips" we had ever seen.  PAGE

September 15, 2011:  A 30 image Summer Lightning Summary has been posted up on the photo
gallery site at http://www.pbase.com/okweatherwatch/11summary.  Some of these photos have been
seen before either on this website or through the blog.  There should be a couple of new ones to
everybody and there are now some descriptions about the images.

I have also now added a page of selected photos which are higher-resolution images for your viewing pleasure.  This page can be found here.
One of two tornadoes observed on November 7th in Caddo County, Oklahoma.  This tornado was about 7 miles south southeast of Carnegie and occurred around 4:45 P.M. CST.

Winter finally shows up...

During the evening hours of 12 February, 1.8 inches of snow fell in Okarche - setting a record for the date.  0.1 of an inch of snow fell early on the 13th which tied the record for the date.  In all, we woke up with about 2 inches of snow on the ground on the 13th.  A quick warm up has just about rid us of our snowfall before making it to the 14th.  The coldest air of the season occurred on the 12th when the low reached 15 degrees.

Click each image for larger version of conjunction.

Nice weather allowed for great viewing of the Jupiter, Venus, Moon conjunction which was best seen on February 25 (left) and February 26 (right).

STORM CHASE 2012

The storm above was a supercell that moved into extreme southwest Oklahoma on March 18th.  The first chase of the 2012 season was a good one - observing very nice storm structure and four tornadoes.  The tornado on the right was the last of the day northwest of Willow, Oklahoma.

April 7, 2012: Early morning thunderstorms rolled through Kingfisher County producing some of the best lightning of the young storm season.  One storm produced quarter size hail just northwest of Okarche.  Gallery

A widespread outbreak of severe thunderstorms occurred on Saturday, April 14 in Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.  Numerous tornadoes were reported in far northwest Oklahoma.  Our chase crew documented nine of them which can be found at the chase page link above.  Also, the map at the right indicates where we viewed storms and tornadoes.  The City of Woodward was hit hardest just after midnight where six people have been killed and major damage has been done to almost 90 homes.
